YOU HAVEN'T READ GAIDEN? NOOOOO. I actually like Gaiden better than Saiyuki, because it's dealing with the Journey to the West legend, and even though Minekura bastardize it (...not unlike Merlin), it's still a wonderful retelling of it, and ANGST. THERE'S SO MUCH ANGST. AND BLOOD. AND EVEN THE HAPPY SCENES LOOK OMINOUS. Well, also because you know the story of Saiyuki, and the four of them crossed paths in their previous lives and it was EPICALLY BAD, and that's why they're so screwed up. But yeah, even though there's some humour, Gaiden sets up doom in the first chapter, and it's SO GOOOOOOOOD. Plus, Nataku's not a random stoic, doll like he is in Saiyuki, he's such an angsty kid. And the Nataku/Goku interactions are just, BWUH. It's like X/1999, except there's hope that Minekura will stick it out and actually finish it. Which reminds me.
