Title: In Thy Orisons
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: gen (hey look! I wrote gen! Actual gen with no traumatic pairings!)
Warnings: Character death (and there we go, right back to the comfortable realm of the traumatic)
Spoilers: None
Summary: Years in Camelot's future things finally come to a head
A/N: This was written for the prompt of Arthur and Uther

Arthur reeks of smoke and steel and ruin, and Uther’s blood pours hot and bright over his hands, soaking through his clothes. He can hear the riots raging outside, the castle besieged, but in here there is only the heaving of ragged breaths and the scuff of boots on bare stone as Uther collapses against him, Arthur’s sword buried to the hilt in his stomach.

‘I only ever wanted to keep you safe,’ Uther rasps.

‘Don’t,’ Arthur grits out; don’t make this mine, he wants to say, don’t lay their deaths at my feet. He wrenches the sword and sweeps it clear. For Gaius, he thinks, burnt alive at Uther’s hands, for Morgana and her unborn child, executed by the closest thing she had to a father; only Merlin’s secret has been kept, but the price is great.

‘It has to stop,’ he whispers. His voice almost cracks but he will not allow it. If Uther has taught him one thing, it is this: whatever festers in his heart, a king must never show weakness. He cannot yield, not even here with his father’s final breath cooling on his cheek.

Uther sags to the floor with a dull thud, the crown tumbling from his head, first gold then crimson. Arthur looks down at the crumpled body and thinks that this is not his father, not this burnt-out husk barricaded behind castle walls, sitting dark-eyed and feverish on the throne in hysterical judgement. As far as Arthur is concerned, Uther has been dead for years; he’s had his time to mourn.

Arthur walks the length of the hall, throws open the doors. ‘The king is dead,’ he declares, voice ringing too loud in the smothered silence. The guards look from his bloodied hands to his steel-blue eyes; they drag Uther’s body from the room and say nothing.

-----------------------

Merlin waits for his liege on the balcony. The square before him teems with the citizenry. A brittle order has returned since Uther passed away, a sacrificial effigy to sate a nation’s fury, but the balance is delicate; ‘murder’ and ‘patricide’ are words not spoken. Arthur is the fulcrum on which everything hinges; he is the standard-bearer for the future. Duty and necessity and a father’s life on his hands: perhaps one day these things will bring him to his knees, but for now, as he must, he remains unbowed, surrendering only behind closed doors.

Arthur does not dress in black – he strides out to greet his people in gold and crimson, a blazing twin to the rising sun; he is not his father. He stares unflinchingly ahead, out and over the assembled crowd, and he speaks. Merlin can almost see the words take shape as they leave his mouth, carving themselves irrevocably into the minds of Camelot’s people. Arthur has power now, one that cannot be defined merely by the crown that weights his brow.

Arthur speaks, and Merlin feels the shifting of an era, an ache that goes bone-deep; he tastes destiny on the wind.

So your writing is basically gorgeous. And God, the whole first half just totally broke my heart. Poor Arthur. :( *clings to him*

And randomly because I am dumb and did not add this to my reply: [livejournal.com profile] merlinadvent looks awesome. And the December 7th fic will also be my BIRTHDAY FIC YAY. :D

(I love December.)

Yay the advent fic will be so fun!! I'm looking forward to it. Also I hope you get super special awesome birthday fic!

Thank you! ♥ Naturally given the prompt I jumped straight to PATRICIDE AND DEATH because apparently that is the kind of person I am *facepalm*

Wow, this was intense. In a good way, of course. Loved the writing, especially the final line.

It would be amazing if they took the show in this general direction.

[identity profile] phantomjam.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Intense is what I was hoping for ♥

Well it does seem that Uther's magic paranoia is becoming worse, or at least more prominent, so while I doubt they'll take it as far as patricide we should see some pretty interesting stuff there *excited*

[identity profile] makeanewworld.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah I s'pose patricide might be a bit too much for Saturday evening kids' telly...my excitement at the possibility of what's to come is running away with me. *g*

[identity profile] phantomjam.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, it would be pretty cool though. I am wondering how they're gonna deal with the darker side of Arthurian legend. Well, they've already sidestepped the Arthur/Morgana conceiving Mordred through incestuous union thing. Cop-out!

[identity profile] julesoh.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This so, so deserved to win, I loved it on the first read and I love it even more now. It's just so shocking, at first, and then the gorgeous descriptions sink in and the ending is so perfect, and hopeful.

I love this. In case I didn't say that enough!

[identity profile] phantomjam.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, thank you! I'm flattered, I don't really know what to say ♥

Your writing is always so evocative and deep and fantastically readable. I loved every word, from the anguish of Arthur and Uther's death to Merlin's observation of the citizens and Arthur's new reign.

I loved the casual mentions of the fates of Gaius and Morgana. Very harsh but so real.

Amazing, as ever.

[identity profile] phantomjam.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! You just made my day! ♥

[identity profile] doomcanary.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! Nicely done!

Also I have been pimped. I've volunteered to write for [livejournal.com profile] merlinadvent. I *totally* want to write yuletide-in-Albion fic :) But when's someone going to do some christmas!Merlin icons?

[identity profile] phantomjam.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)

Thank you! ♥

That was breathtaking. So dark, so unexpected. I especially loved: this is not his father, not this burnt-out husk barricaded behind castle walls, sitting dark-eyed and feverish on the throne in hysterical judgement. Beautiful imagery.

Thank you! ♥
I just really like the idea of Uther's paranoia and what could happen if it were taken to an extreme. I'm glad you like it! :D
